Museum | Lincoln | England | United Kingdom

The Metheringham Airfield Visitor Centre in Lincolnshire is a small, accredited museum dedicated to the men and women who were stationed with the 106th Squadron of the Royal Air Force Bomber Command between 1943 and the end of the Second World War at the former RAF Metheringham.

Located in a restored ration store from the Second World War, the centre houses a variety of artifacts that illustrate life and work on an active airfield during the war. Visitors can explore, among other things, an original Douglas Dakota C47 that is displayed in the hangar. Access to the interior of the aircraft is via a staircase.

The museum also provides insight into the history of the 106th Squadron and the significance of RAF Metheringham during the Second World War. There are regular events, lectures, and special exhibitions that keep the heritage of the air force and the stories of the soldiers stationed there alive.

The Metheringham Airfield Visitor Centre is a significant site that preserves the heritage of the Royal Air Force and the history of the Second World War, offering visitors a deep insight into the lives of air force personnel of that time.

Visiting the Metheringham Visitor Centre was an amazing experience. The guides were very knowledgeable and the exhibits on display really grabbed my attention. The Dakota on site is a great exhibit and I enjoyed getting into the aircraft. I learned a lot about 106 Squadron and their wartime operations. It is wonderful that the courage and sacrifices of those amazing airmen are remembered and honoured. A thoroughly enjoyable day. Thank you. Carol Farmer

What a fantastic museum. The exhibits are interesting and informative. The staff are extremely friendly and knowledgeable. There is a Dakota aircraft which you can go on board with a guide, sit in the cockpit etc. There is a small cafe which has a great selection of snacks and drinks, all reasonably priced. It's dog friendly (on short lead) everywhere. Definitely worth a visit. A credit to the staff and volunteers who run it.

This is a hidden gem of a museum, located in the communal site of the airfield, it pays tribute to and tells the story of the men and women who served here in ww2. It's beautifully done and very poignant. As a bonus, well two in fact, you can climb inside a C47 and drive on some of the peri track/taxi ways/runways as these are now public roads. It has an 'atmosphere' and is very moving.

Fantastic attraction, well worth a visit whether you're local or visiting from overseas. The C-47 is extremely well presented, and I learned quite a bit from the other exhibits as well. And I saw a Lancaster fly overhead, which was a bonus!

I was hooked as soon as I arrived; lovely atmosphere and feeling and amazing volunteer staff. The displays gave a really strong sense of the reality of war, and what the aircrew went through. Loved the Dakota, the museum volunteers were somehow able to dial up a low level Lancaster flypast. Great visit, strongly recommended

This museum is bigger than it looks on the net, staff were all great and knowledgeable and very glad to see me and my dog Arthur, the dc3/c47 Dakota is a great exhibit and let arthur on board too, the old runway remains aren't far away and worth finding definitely a must see museum.

We went on a whim with no idea there was a 1940s day on today, but it was absolutely fantastic. The volunteers were lovely, the food was nice and reasonably priced, and the live music was amazing. The highlight for me was the Operation Neptune briefing, which was really professionally done and fascinating to be a part of. Sadly, there weren't many people in attendance, but I'm so glad I was able to be there.

Very interesting museum run by a very knowledgeable group of volunteers. Although may be considered a small museum there are numerous interesting artefacts. The most interesting being the Douglas DC3 in full military guise. A bonus is that visitors can go inside it with an opportunity to sit in the cockpit. An additional bonus on the day we visited was a fly pass by the Red Arrows on their way to a display at Cleethorpes. Well worth a visit.

A really great museum ran by superb volunteers. A great collection of memorabilia and information about the Metheringham airfield that was one of many that had such an instrumental part in winning ww2. A really good way to learn about the unsung heros of 106 squadron. 59 aircraft never returned to this airfield, such a shame ,such a loss , and at such a young age , how could we ever repay these heros. I thoroughly recommend people visit this superb museum to learn about what was given up by so many to give us what we take for granted today.

Fascinating and moving visit. Great group of volunteers made the day especially enjoyable. Allow the best part of a day and you can explore also around and away from the visitor centre (with hand drawn map provided) to get a sense of how huge this Airfield was. Courage, bravery and professionalism from all those who lived and passed here that we must never forget.

Visited here as part of a scout group. The volunteers were engaging and informative, able to talk to our Beavers and Cubs in an age appropriate way while still delivering important information. The activities they planned were great, and our Beavers and Cubs haven’t stopped talking about the visit. We will definitely arrange another visit in the future.
